Reddit’s mobile app is well-made and fast. All website visitors get redirected to their official app, which is complete with an obnoxious banner that pops up each time you open a link on Reddit in the browser.
What is NSFW?
This stands for “Not safe for work”. NSFW means that content may be considered offensive and inappropriate for viewing in public spaces or when there are minors present. This label covers, but is not limited to, all explicit and mature content, and can also include bawdy stories or references. This odd, versatile internet acronym has found its way into internet articles and social media posts.
When used correctly, NSFW is a warning that shows a link to a video, audio, webpage, or photo, that has content that is considered inappropriate. While the word is usually linked with pornography, it is mostly used as a warning label for political, violent, or foul content. Despite its literal meaning, the acronym is used to save users from any kind of public embarrassment. It may appear on the title of a YouTube video, in the header of an email, or before a website link.
Sometimes, NSFW is used to show that a webpage may make users uncomfortable. In these instances, it is sometimes accompanied by a “trigger word”. For instance, a video containing detailed photos of war can be labeled “NSFW TW: War,” or something to show that it is violent.
How to Enable NSFW Content on Reddit
Although there’s no option to enable NSFW content in the official Reddit mobile app, your preferences from Reddit.com will carry over. Due to restrictions from Apple Store and Google, some NSFW may not be available in the mobile app, even after adjusting the app settings. However, you can enable it by following these steps:
- Open a web browser on your mobile device. Even though you can’t change your NSFW content preferences in the official Reddit app, you can get the job done in your web browser. If you use one of the non-official Reddit apps on your device, you can still use this method to enable NSFW content for that app.
- Visit their official website
- Click on the menu button at the top-right corner of the webpage
- Log in or sign up. If you’re already signed in, skip this step
- Fill in your login information and click on login. This logs you into your Reddit account and takes you to the Reddit mobile site
- Click on the menu again. You’ll see a drop-down menu
- You’ll be asked to install the Reddit app. Tap the mobile site link at the bottom of the screen
- Go to Settings. It’s the gear icon in the menu. It will open the same version of the settings page as it appears on a computer
- Click on the checkmark under “NSFW Content” to remove it. You can find it under the “media” header in the first section of the page. When the box is unchecked, adult content will appear in your Reddit feed, and search results
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and tap the “content options” heading
- Check the boxes next to the first two “Content options.” Both options should be selected if you want unrestricted access to NSFW content on your mobile device
- Scroll down and save your options
